D Movies aren’t going to be hitting the new Blu- ray 4. K format - Stephan Jukic – January 2. The Blu- ray Disc Association has hammered one more nail into the coffin of 3. D movie entertainment. Based on a recently leaked Powerpoint slide from an organization meeting, it seems that the finalized specs for the new line of 4. K Blu- ray discs that are going to emerge later this year won’t be designed to transfer 3. D in UHD resolution. However, other parts of the slide do indicate some otherwise great news for the new 4. K discs. The leaked image was first posted by Japanese technology website AV Watch and indicates that the upcoming Blu- ray disc format and all media which support it will be able to handle ultra HD content up to a resolution of 3. Furthermore, the discs and their media players will support much wider color gamuts than what’s currently available with Blu- ray: the specific specs indicate BT2.
We can also look forward to a peak video bit- rate performance of 1. Mbps. All of these details are excellent as far as normal 4. K media go and they should bring some truly smooth, high quality entertainment to the homes of those who buy the new 4. K Blu- ray players and discs when they go on sale, but, for those who love 3. D viewing at home, at least according to the leaked document slide, there simply isn’t any mention of 3. D being available in ultra HD resolution. ![]() The leaked Blu- ray UHD documentation. Of course, a lack of mention in a single slide doesn’t constitute hard proof of anything but it certainly is suggestive and all the more so when we consider the problems that 3. DTV has faced since it was pushed on consumers a few years ago. Almost since its arrival, 3. D has shown itself to be a weak selling point for home entertainment and so far is looking like it will definitely go the way of the dodo. However, for those few fans of 3. D who still cling to the technology, the Blu- ray rumors sparked by the leaked Powerpoint certainly could be cause for more worry. They indicate that users of the 4. K Blu- ray discs will basically be given a choice between watching movies in 4. K at 2. D settings or getting to enjoy 3. D in the movies it’s available for only at Full HD resolution. This still isn’t a bad compromise but it’s a far cry from the full UHD immersion that a lot of 4. K TVs are designed for given their own internal 3. DTV capabilities and even the inclusion of 3. D glasses with some models. Oddly, the HDMI 2. K TVs come with –which the new generation of Blu- ray players will certainly also include—is more than capable of handling the needed bandwidth for transferring 4. K and 3. D at the same time between media player and UHD TV. However, the declining overall popularity of the 3. D format and the need to wear silly glasses while enjoying it is likely what contributed to the 3. D exclusion for Blu- ray, assuming that it’s true to begin with. Story by 4k. com.
